Giancarlo Scalia is currently working on 2 new productions. He is currently working as répétiteur for Lakeshore Light Opera’s new production of Sullivan’s The Grand Duke and he is currently working as music director for Contact Theatre’s new production of Spring Awakening.

November 2023

Giancarlo Scalia is pleased to collaborate once again with the Jeunes ambassadeurs lyriques for their Italian evening on November 23. He will accompany 19 talented singers from various countries in this Italian opera gala.

He will also serve as music director and pianist for Contact Theatre’s 5th Year Celebration and Fundraiser on November 19. Casts from previous seasons will perform excerpts from Bonnie and Clyde, Chicago, Next to Normal, Reefer Madness and Spring Awakening.

He is currently working as répétiteur for l’Opéra bouffe du Québec’s new production of Offenbach’s La Périchole and he is currently working as chorus master and répétiteur for Sortilegio, a new opera by Elizabeth Raum and Giancarlo Scalia presented by Leoria Productions.

Halifax Summer Opera Festival

Giancarlo Scalia is happy to be returning to Halifax this summer for the 2023 Halifax Summer Opera Festival. He will be musical director and pianist for their new production of Offenbach’s La jolie parfumeuse directed by Andrew Pelrine and David Mosey. The festival begins in late July and performances run from August 12 to 19.

Concerto pour piano

Giancarlo Scalia’s new work Concerto pour piano will be premiered at Salle Pierre-Mercure in Montréal on July 26 by soloist Jimmy Brière and l’Orchestre de la francophonie under the direction of Jean=Philippe Tremblay.

Nevenotte

Along with the members of Corifea, Giancarlo Scalia has just completed a residency at the Maison de la culture de Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie workshopping the first act of Nevenotte, a new opera for piano and voice.

Giancarlo Scalia is pleased to collaborate once again with the Jeunes ambassadeurs lyriques for their Italian evening at l’École de musique Vincent d’Indy on October 14. He will accompany 20 talented singers from various countries in this Italian opera gala.

He is also currently serving as répétiteur for l’Opéra bouffe du Québec’s new production of Francis Lopez’s La Belle de Cadix directed by Alain Zouvi. He will be in the orchestra pit for the shows run conducted by Simon Fournier from October 22 to 30.

Halifax Summer Opera Festival

Giancarlo Scalia is happy to be returning to Halifax this summer as staff pianist for the 2022 Halifax Summer Opera Festival. He will be répétiteur for their new production of Gluck’s Armide directed by Nina Scott-Stoddart and David Mosey and led by conductor Melissa Doiron. The festival begins in late July and performances run from August 11 to 14.

Premieres

Two of Giancarlo Scalia’s works will be premiered this summer.

Éclats et souvenirs for string quartet will be premiered July 13 in Montreal by musicians of the Orchestre de la francophonie and Il lui disait for soprano and piano will be premiered between August 22 and 26 during the Académie Francis Poulenc in Tours, France.

Next to Normal

After a break of over 2 years due to the pandemic, Giancarlo Scalia is very excited to resume work on stage productions. He will lead a talented cast of singers and musicians for Contact Theatre’s production of Next to Normal , directed by Debora Friedmann.

Mother’s Day Concert

Giancarlo Scalia was pleased to accompany a variety of artists in the virtual Mother’s Day concert presented by La Scena Musicale. He collaborated with singers Marie-Claire Drolet, Jean-Philippe McClish, Ania Hejnar, Monika Mazanka, Samira Tou and Mishael Eusebio as well as with cellist Olga Mizyuk.

The concert will premiere on May 6 at 7:00 pm and will be available for streaming for 90 days.

New works

Giancarlo Scalia has completed his Piano Concerto for l’Orchestre de la Francophonie and pianist Jimmy Brière. Premiere is scheduled for summer 2023.

He has also begun work on a new work for soprano and piano on a text by Victor Hugo, commissioned by l’Académie Francis Poulenc in Tours (France) for their upcoming summer academy.

Piano Concerto

Giancarlo Scalia has begun work on a new piano concerto to be premiered in 2023 by l’Orchestre de la francophonie and pianist Jimmy Brière. This commission is made possible through the generous support of the Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec.

Premiere of Renaître

Giancarlo’s latest composition Renaître, a song cycle for tenor, mezzo soprano and piano, will be premiered on May 2 at the Conservatoire de Montréal by mezzo soprano Rose Naggar-Tremblay, tenor Mathieu Abel and pianist Julien LeBlanc. Commissioned and presented by the Société d’art vocal de Montréal.

Recitals at Concordia University

Giancarlo Scalia is pleased to be playing three voice recitals at Concordia University’s Oscar Peterson hall in April. He will be performing with students of Dr. Irene Feher’s studio: sopranos Julia Kennific (April 16), Olivia Charlebois (April 22) and Mégane Flore Vallière (April 23).

March 2020 – Covid-19 Update

The Covid-19 situation has had many consequences in the coming months. Upcoming concerts with the Equi-Vox choir, Concordia University voice students and at the Festival Classica in Saint-Lambert are CANCELLED. The upcoming production of Le Nozze di Figaro with the voice department of l’École de musique Vincent d’Indy is CANCELLED and the upcoming Kurt Weill revue of Light Opera of Montreal is POSTPONED. A recital with baritone Jeffrey Carl and soprano Susanna Eyton-Jones and a gala for l’Opéra de Lévis are POSTPONED.

Rehearsals are well underway for Light Opera of Montreal’s new production of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. The show is directed by Buck Delaney and musically directed from the piano by Giancarlo Scalia.

Both of Giancarlo Scalia’s works composed in 2018 will be premiered on May 12 in Montreal.

Fantasmi will be performed by mezzo soprano Rose Naggar-Tremblay with the composer at the piano at the Café d’art Vocal and Sinfonietta will be performed by the West Island Youth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jean-Pascal Hamelin at the Oscar Peterson concert hall.

Giancarlo Scalia will be performing at Opéra dans le Parc’s benefit concert on December 3 alongside various singers and musicians.

He has also completed his new work for orchestra Sinfonietta and has begun work on a cycle for mezzo Rose Naggar-Tremblay. Both works to be premiered in concerts in May 2019.

Giancarlo Scalia will be performing an Italian opera gala for Jeunes ambassadeurs lyriques on the 19th. The concert features 24 singers from 8 countries and is a prelude to their gala with orchestra on the 21st.

Rehearsals are also well underway for l’Opéra bouffe du Québec’s upcoming production of Lopez’s Le Chanteur de Mexico.
